Ford Reveals Mustang Bullitt

The Ford Mustang was made famous in one of Hollywood's most revered car chases in the 1968 blockbuster hit of the same name.

Only available in a limited edition run and produced to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the famous Steve McQueen movie, it will be confined to the US market only and is based on the V8-powered GT coupe with increased performance thanks to the standard fitment of an active exhaust system, an open-air induction system and the intake manifold from the Shelby GT350 Mustang with 87mm throttle bodies.

The improvements take peak power to 354kW and increase torque output to 570Nm, which Ford claims gives the Bullitt a top speed of 262km/h - 12km/h more than the standard GT.

It will only be offered in two colours, Dark Highland Green - the same as the original Bullitt Mustang - and a Shadow Black, and features a host of unique exterior modifications inspired by the original movie car, including five-spoke dark grey alloy wheels, the deletion of the pony badge in the exclusive front grille and chrome highlights around the window surrounds.

The car features a 12-inch fully-digital dash inside (which features a specific start-up screen that replaces the Pony emblem with the Bullitt car itself) as well as a green contrast stitching throughout the leather-line cabin, a heated steering wheel and a white cue ball-type gearshifter - another nod to the original movie machine.

Ford is also offering three options for those who want more; Recaro leather sports seats, magnetic suspension and an upgraded electronics package with sat nav, a higher-grade audio system and additional safety functions like blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

“When making a Bullitt, there are certain things it absolutely must have,” said Carl Widmann, Mustang's chief engineer.

“It has to have the right attitude, it has to be unique in some way from a Mustang GT, and more than anything, it has to be badass.”

Molly McQueen, the granddaughter of the Hollywood icon, introduced the Bullitt Mustang with a modern (and tamer) recreation of the famous movie car chase.
