Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid recalled due to engine fire risk

Ford Australia has recalled 206 examples of its Escape Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), following the discovery of a fault which could lead to an engine fire.

While the recall covers vehicles built by Ford between 2019 and 2023, the Escape PHEV's Australian showroom roll-out began in May 2022 – almost 18 months after it was first due to arrive.

The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: "Due to a manufacturing issue, the engine may fail prematurely. If this occurs, engine oil and/or fuel vapor could be released into the engine bay and accumulate in the presence of ignition source resulting in a vehicle fire.

"A vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders, and/or damage to property.

"If the vehicle's engine exhibits an unusual noise, experiences a reduction in available engine power, generates smoke from engine compartment and/or oil smoke odour is identified when driving, drivers should stop the vehicle where is safe to do so, turn off the ignition, evacuate the vehicle as soon as possible."

Ford Australia has advised it will contact affected owners in writing when parts become available, requesting they make an appointment at their preferred dealership for the repair, free of charge.
