Cupra Terramar plug-in hybrid SUV due in Australia in 2025

The Volkswagen Group's Spanish subsidiary is due to launch two new SUVs next year, after reporting 5000 new cars as sold since it launched nearly two years ago.

The Cupra Terramar mid-size family SUV – a twin under the skin to the Audi Q3 – is due in Australian showrooms next year with the expected option of plug-in hybrid power.

It comes as Cupra – the Spanish car brand owned by Volkswagen – reports its 5000th car as sold in Australia, with 38 per cent of its deliveries last year hybrid or electric.

The Cupra Terramar is the successor to the Ateca mid-size SUV – which is based on an eight-year-old car in Europe – and will measure about 4.5 metres long.

It will be built in Hungary alongside the next Audi Q3 – with which it will share a platform, as well as all other petrol models in the Cupra range – with a choice of mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid turbo four-cylinder power.

Australian showroom arrivals are due in 2025. Cupra Australia said in a media release this morning the plug-in hybrid – with up to 100km of claimed electric driving range – is "expected" to come here.

It will be the last new petrol-powered Cupra, as the company is poised to go electric-only by the end of the decade.

Alongside its sales announcement, Cupra Australia has confirmed it is due to open a pop-up "sales and service centre" at the Zagame Tullamarine dealership in Melbourne in April 2024, before a permanent location opens a few kilometres away in Essendon Fields, Victoria in early 2025.
