Chinese phone maker Huawei to begin making electric vehicles – report
Huawei could be taking a leaf out of Apple's playbook, with rumours the phone maker is looking to offer electric cars.
Huawei, the world's largest telecommunications equipment maker, could be about to launch a range of electric vehicles.
Sources close to Huawei have told news outlet Reuters the Chinese phone company is in talks with a number of car makers as it seeks to break into the automotive sector.
While the company has denied the claims, it's understood to be discussing potential partnerships with state-owned Changan Automobile, as well as a BAIC Group subsidiary, to help manufacture the vehicles.
The plan mirrors recent moves by Apple to pursue its own autonomous electric cars.
Chinese car makers BYD and SAIC currently use Huawei 5G-enabled electronics for both entertainment and navigation (BYD model shown below).
Huawei was banned from participating in Australian telecommunication network upgrades in recent years, with security experts fearing data may be covertly shared with Chinese intelligence agencies.
The controversy preceded US sanctions on the phone maker, imposed by the former Trump administration amid trade tensions between the two countries.
