MG to increase prices by up to $2000

Budget brand MG has raised prices for the second time in six months, and another round of increases is due in April. But for now the cost of Australia’s cheapest electric car remains unchanged.

Chinese car brand MG will increase prices on half its model range from today – including vehicles already in dealer stock.

And, in a second round of price rises, MG will increase the drive-away cost of certain models by between $1000 and $2000 from April 2022 once fresh stock arrives.

A number of 2021-built MG models already been distributed across the dealer network will go up in price by between $500 and $1000 from today.

Once these models clear and 2022-built stock arrives from April 2022 onwards, prices will rise by between $1000 and $2000, the company has announced.

It means the price of MG’s cheapest model – and Australia’s top-selling city hatch – the MG 3 Core (pictured below) will go up from $17,990 to $18,490 drive-away.

Three years ago, the MG 3 Core was $15,990 drive-away, increased to $16,490 drive-away in April 2020, stepped up to $17,190 drive-away in September 2020, then was $16,690 drive-away from September 2020 through to the end of February 2021, before stepping up to $16,990 drive-away in March 2021 and $17,490 drive-away from April to June 2021.

In July 2021, the MG 3 Core climbed to $17,990 drive-away. From today, it is $18,490 drive-away – $2500 dearer than its starting point in 2019, an increase of 15 per cent over three years.

The MG 3 with navigation is now $18,990 drive-away – an increase of $500 compared to its most recent drive-away offer, and $1500 more than its price throughout much of the previous 18 months.

A statement from MG Australia said: “In the face of unprecedented cost increases in raw materials and transport logistics in 2021, MG Motor will revise its national drive-away pricing from February 1, 2022.”

The company added: “Adjustments of between $500 and $1000 will be made to a number of 2021-built vehicles, while 2022-built vehicles will be adjusted by between $1000 and $2000. The 2022-built stock will arrive from April 2022.”

While price rises apply to eight of MG's 16 models, the MG ZS EVAustralia’s cheapest electric car (available in mass numbers) – remains $44,990 drive-away.

However, the larger MG HS Plus EV Essence plug-in hybrid has gone up in price by $1000, from $47,990 to $48,990 drive-away.
