BMW unveils retro turbo concept

BMW's return to performance car form offers stirring performance in a compact body for far less money than the bigger M4 coupe.
The car has struck a chord with buyers around the world, prompting lengthy waiting lists that pushed some Australian customers to try and sell their examples for $40,000 more than BMW's $89,900 list price.
The little unit's turbocharged engine and compact dimensions make it the perfect base for a tribute to the BMW 2002 Turbo, the first turbocharged model from a brand that offers turbocharged performance in all of its cars.
Enter the BMW 2002 Hommage, the latest in a line of tribute machines that celebrate significant models such as the M1 supercar, 3.0 CSL racer and 328 roadster.
Intended as a styling exercise to celebrate the brand's heritage while offering a glimpse at the future, the Hommage concept offers a modern spin on the 2002 Turbo's iconic looks.
Naturally, it has a new interpretation of that machine's infamous "obruT" sticker on the front bumper, a cheeky detail there to remind other drivers that the car in their rear view mirror has a "Turbo".
The car's boldly rendered lines feature knowing touches such as floating indicators mounted near the bonnet shutline and gold headlamp surrounds to mark the "golden" 50th anniversary of the 2002 Turbo's launch.
The official line from BMW is that the tribute "represents a clear statement of how pure driving pleasure is defined in 2016".
While BMW has no plans to put the car into production, it is possible that the race-themed Hommage could point to a track-focused M2 CSL or M2 GTS variant of the compact performance the car.
