2012 AUDI A5
Audi has revealed its all-new 1.8 litre TFSI engine, offering power figures largely on-par with the current 2.0 litre TFSI - and with considerably improved fuel consumption figures.
Producing 125kW of power at 3800rpm, the new engine falls only slightly short of the 2.0 litre engine's 132kW.
Torque is equal to the 2.0 litre engine at 320Nm, but maximum twist now comes online between 1400rpm and 3700rpm, compared to 1500-3900rpm for the outgoing unit.
Paired with a manual transmission in the updated Audi A5 Coupe, the 0-100km/h sprint is covered in 7.9 seconds.
All told, those are relatively impressive figures for a 1.8 litre petrol engine, brought about through greater boost pressure (now up to 1.3 bar / 19psi) and a new higher temperature-resistant alloy.
The real star of this story is the Euro 6 emissions-compliant engine's fuel consumption. At 5.7 l/100km, Audi has maintained the 2.0 litre unit's output while cutting fuel use by nearly 2.0 litres per 100km.
The improved fuel economy is delivered partly through higher pressure in the direct injection system and two or three injection stages per cycle, providing more efficient fuel delivery.
Australia
Speaking with TMR today, Audi Australia's Sean Poppitt confirmed a local debut for the new engine in the first half of 2012, where it will launch with the updated 2012 A5 line-up.
Mr Poppitt also confirmed that the new engine will appear in the local A4 line-up, although launch timing is still to be confirmed.
