Astra Equipe adds more value

A limited-edition Equipe version of Holden's TS Astra Classic sedan and five-door hatch has just arrived in showrooms with $1500 in added features at no extra cost.

The 5 percent import tariff reduction on January 1 had already reduced the manual TS Classic models by $1000 to $18,990 plus on-road costs. Four-speed automatic adds $2000, metallic paint $300.

Representing a new two-model Astra strategy, the 1.8-litre TS models, introduced in 1998, were kept in the market last year when the latest AH series arrived. However, the budget-priced TS models are now sourced from GM's Polish plant instead of its Belgium factory.

The TS Astra Equipe gains 15-inch alloy wheels, anti-lock brakes, cruise control, traction control, power rear windows and heated power mirrors. These complement the standard TS Astra's air-conditioning, dual airbags, remote central locking, power front windows, height adjustable driver's seat, height and reach adjust steering wheel, Blaupunkt CD player and woven cloth trim.

Mechanically, it has a sports-tuned suspension, electro hydraulic power rack and pinion steering and four-wheel disc brakes. All seats come with lap/sash seat belts; the front seat belts are height adjustable and with pre-tensioners and force limiters. The brake and clutch pedals are designed to break away in an accident to avoid impact with the legs.

Holden's two-model Astra strategy has paid off with the entry TS model keeping the Holden nameplate the second-best-selling small car for 2004 behind the Toyota Corolla. However, in January, Mazda's 3 displaced both to claim the small car title for the first time.
