Another styling update imminent for 2024 Toyota HiLux, with price rises, mild-hybrid tech

The Toyota HiLux ute is due to receive its biggest update in four years – including a revised look for most models – weeks after losing the title of Australia's best-selling new vehicle it has held for seven years to the Ford Ranger.

Dealers have been advised price rises of up to $770 are planned to coincide with a new front-end design on most HiLux variants, additional features, and 48-volt mild-hybrid technology on some models.

Toyota Australia is yet to outline the updated HiLux range but dealers have been told it is due to commence production this month before formally going on sale in March 2024.

It will represent the third facelift for the Toyota HiLux in six years – and the fourth front-end design since the current model launched in 2015 – after a styling update in 2018, and a more comprehensive mid-life update in 2020.

Photos of the design changes – described to dealers as a "front face refresh" – are yet to be published in Australia or Thailand (where the HiLux is built), and it is unclear how significant the updates will be.

They are planned to apply to all models except petrol and single-cab chassis versions – as with previous facelifts.

The SR5 is poised to gain a blacked-out version of the new look, with gloss black mirror caps and door handles, a black sports bar, black-finish tailgate handle, darkened headlight surrounds, and a dark silver and black rear bumper.

Dealers have been advised all pick-up models are due to gain gas struts and dampers for the tailgate to make it easier to raise and lower.

Standard on the SR5 and Rogue – and optional on the SR – will be 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, which Toyota claims can trim fuel consumption by up to 10 per cent, in conjunction with auto engine stop-start technology.

However the 48-volt models will not be marketed as hybrids in Australia as they cannot deliver the same fuel savings – up to 50 per cent – as Toyota's petrol-hybrid passenger cars and SUVs.

Toyota Australia says it will not apply the hybrid badge unless "the engine and the electric motor can propel the vehicle together or independently" – unlike the 48-volt HiLux, which uses the electric system to power auxiliary systems such as lights, engine pumps and fans, and air conditioning.

Front and rear parking sensors will become standard on the HiLux SR dual-cab automatic pick-up. Previously parking sensors were only offered from the SR5 model up.

The mild-hybrid version of the HiLux SR – available in automatic dual-cab cab-chassis and pick-up forms only – is also set to gain keyless entry and start, auto up/down functionality for all side windows, dual-zone climate control, and carpet flooring, for $1020 more than the regular version.

Dealers have been told a wireless smartphone charging pad, and rear USB ports will be added to the SR5 dual-cab automatic pick-up, Rogue, and GR Sport variants. The SR5 extra-cab auto is due to gain the wireless charger, but no rear USB ports.

More details of the 2024 Toyota HiLux range are due by March, as production is due to begin imminently.

The update is expected to be the last significant change to what was Australia's top-selling new vehicle for seven years in a row – until its streak was brought to an end by the Ford Ranger in 2023 – before an all-new model arrives in 2025.
