Alfa Romeo Stelvio prices revealed

Italian brand jumps in to the crowded mid-size SUV market.

Alfa Romeo has taken aim at the Germans with competitive pricing for its first SUV, the all-new Stelvio.

The Italian brand is late to the luxury SUV party but it is coming in hot with its first high-riding offering due to land in Australian showrooms from March 20, 2018.

Alfa Romeo is offering local buyers a simple range with only two choices: a diesel and a petrol variant both of which are all-wheel drive and come equipped with an eight-speed automatic. A limited run of 300 launch editions is also available initially.

Pricing for the two-tier range starts at $65,900 before on-road costs for the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol variant.

This price puts it at the competitive end of the premium mid-size SUV segment, undercutting the $66,900 rear-wheel drive BMW X3 20i, $73,211 Audi Q5 petrol and the $70,611 Mercedes-Benz GLC250.

The turbocharged petrol unit produces 148kW and 330Nm and is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission delivering power to all four wheels.

Alfa Romeo has priced the diesel version from $67,900 (plus on-roads), which is more on par with entry-lvel diesel offerings from rival brands like the $67,500 GLC220d, $65,900 Audi Q5 TDI and the $69,900 BMW X3 20d.

Power for the Stelvio diesel comes from a 2.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 154kW and 470Nm and again is paired to an eight-speed automatic that drives all four wheels.

Specification is equal across both models with standard kit including 19-inch alloy wheels, electric tailgate, leather upholstery, leather steering wheel, anti-dazzle rear view mirror,  a 7.0-inch digital instrument display, 8.8-inch infotainment screen with navigation and a reversing camera with front and rear parking sensors and keyless entry.

Safety tech includes autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, cruise control and tyre pressure monitoring.

Initially Alfa Romeo will offer 300 Stelvio Launch Editions – 200 diesel and 100 petrol – which are priced from $71,900 for the petrol and $73,900 for the diesel.

The Italian brand claims the Launch Editions have $8000 worth of extras including exclusive 19-inch alloy wheels, red brake calipers, aluminum pedals and interior highlights, black roof rails, heated front sports seats and steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, 14-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo and privacy glass.

The high-performance Stelvio Quadrifoglio will join the range later in the year.
