2024 Tesla Model 3 recalled to fix child-seat compliance breach

The latest Tesla Model 3 has been recalled by the US car maker to open access to a child-seat top-tether point for the middle rear seats, as required by the Australian Design Rules.

Tesla has recalled 505 examples of its 2024 Tesla Model 3 to address a breach of Australian motor vehicle regulations.

The affected Model 3 vehicles are stamped (and were sold between) December 2023 and January 2024.

The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, states: "The rear centre seat position of the Model 3 does not have an accessible top-restraint anchorage point as required by Australian Design Rule 34/03."

"If the top-tether restraint anchorage for the rear-centre seat is not accessible in accordance with Australian Design Rule 34/03, an infant or child car seat restraint cannot be securely attached to it."

As first reported by Drive earlier this month, the recently facelifted Tesla Model 3 was manufactured with the child anchor under the parcel tray – however, the US electric-car giant did not provide access as required by Australian regulations, as offered by the pre-facelift model.

A full list of vehicle identification numbers for the 505 vehicles involved in the recall can be found here.

Tesla advises it will contact affected owners to schedule an appointment to fit the replacement access flap.

"Until this is completed, consumers should not secure an infant or child car seat on the rear-centre seat or otherwise attach an infant or child car seat restraint to the top-tether anchorage," advises the Department of Infrastructure.
