The 2023 Suzuki Ignis city-car range has gained a flagship Shadow edition, priced from $27,990 drive-away.

The Ignis is the second Suzuki model to receive the Shadow black-edition treatment, following the recently discontinued Baleno hatch.

Unlike the Baleno, the Ignis Shadow will be a permanent member of the range, priced $1500 dearer than the GLX variant on which it is based.

Drive understands the Ignis Shadow is due to be followed later this year by Swift Shadow and Vitara Shadow models, with details to be confirmed closer to showroom arrivals.

Compared to the GLX, the Ignis Shadow gains black exterior decals and a black rear roof spoiler. It is available in all paint colours offered on the Ignis GLX, except Super Black Pearl.

As previously reported by Drive, the Suzuki Ignis GL and GLX were hit with a price rise of $1000 before on-road costs – or $1500 drive-away – from 7 September 2022.

The latest in a line of price increases in recent years has seen the base Suzuki Ignis RRP rise by $5500 – before on-road costs – over four years with few, if any, extra features added.

Powering the Suzuki Ignis range is a 1.2-litre non-turbo four-cylinder petrol engine with 66kW and 120Nm, driving the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission in the base GL – or a continuously-variable automatic as an option in the GL, or standard in the GLX and Shadow.

The engine supports 91-octane regular unleaded petrol, and claims to consume on average 4.7 litres of fuel per 100km with the manual, or 4.9L/100km with the CVT auto.

Standard features on the base Ignis GL include 15-inch steel wheels with hubcaps, a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite navigation and Bluetooth, a rear-view camera, four speakers, cloth seats, air conditioning, and power mirrors, windows and locks.

However, no advanced safety features – such as autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist or blind-spot monitoring – are available on any Ignis model, one of the last new cars on sale in Australia today without the crucial technology that is widely regarded as the bare minimum by most rivals.

The Ignis GLX adds LED headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, auto climate-control air conditioning, sensor key entry, push-button start, and two tweeters (for a six 'speaker' sound system).

Whereas the Ignis GL is a five-seater, the Ignis GLX and Shadow are certified as four-seater vehicles.
