2023 Nissan X-Trail price and specs

The 2023 Nissan X-Trail is due in Australian showrooms before the end of this year with more technology, space and power than before – but much higher prices.

Offered in a choice of four model grades (ST, ST-L, Ti and Ti-L), the new X-Trail mid-size SUV – which hits Nissan Australia dealers two years after its US launch – will cost from $36,750 plus on-road costs for an ST automatic, $4085 more than the variant it replaces.

Buyers of the entry-level ST and ST-L grades have a choice of five seats and front-wheel drive, or seven seats and all-wheel drive. The higher-spec Ti and Ti-L are offered exclusively with five seats and all-wheel drive.

The seven-seat, all-wheel-drive models cost $5515 to $6015 more than the old seven-seat, front-wheel-drive grades, or $5125 to $5615 more than the previous-generation all-wheel-drive five seaters. The X-Trail loses its title of Australia's cheapest seven-seat SUV to the LDV D90.

Sitting atop the range is a new $52,990 Ti-L luxury flagship, with niceties like nappa leather seats and a head-up display – but a price $6875 higher than the old Ti flagship. A new Ti is offered in the 2023 range, priced from $49,990 plus on-road costs, up $3875.

All models at launch will be powered by a 2.5-litre non-turbo four-cylinder petrol engine shared with its twin under the skin, the Mitsubishi Outlander, offering 135kW and 245Nm (up 9kW/19Nm over the old X-Trail's 2.5-litre mill).

It sends power to the front or all wheels through a continuously-variable automatic transmission (CVT), depending on variant. Towing capacity is rated at up to two tonnes, up 500kg.

The old model's six-speed manual transmission has been axed – pushing the increase in base price beyond $6000 (2022 ST manual vs 2023 ST automatic).

Due after the 2.5-litre petrol range is an e-Power hybrid model, which uses a petrol engine as a generator, creating energy to power a small battery pack and electric motor on the front axle.

Few details of pricing or specifications have been announced for this drivetrain, though expect a price premium over standard X-Trail models. It's expected to share its mechanicals with the new Qashqai e-Power, detailed last week.

Standard features on the entry-level model include 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 7.0-inch driver display, keyless entry and start, cloth seats, a 'urethane' (i.e. plastic) steering wheel, and rear parking sensors.

Most available advanced safety features are standard across the range, including autonomous emergency braking (with pedestrian/cyclist detection and support for intersections), lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Also standard is an airbag between the front seats – a key feature among cars which have scored five stars under the latest ANCAP crash safety testing criteria, including the new X-Trail's rivals from Hyundai, Kia and Haval.

More expensive grades add features such as a head-up display, dual 12.3-inch interior displays, quilted nappa leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, a 10-speaker sound system, and Nissan's ProPilot assisted highway driving system.

The 2023 Nissan X-Trail is due in Australian showrooms before the end of this year, with the e-Power hybrid variant to follow.
