2023 Mitsubishi ASX hybrid and plug-in hybrid detailed

The 2023 Mitsubishi ASX has been teased in a new image (below), accompanying details of the small SUV’s powertrains for parts of Europe.

Mitsubishi’s German arm has confirmed the new ASX will make its world premiere this September, with order books set to open there in the second quarter of 2023.

The European ASX will be based on the CMF-B platform shared across the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance – the same architecture underpinning the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur, and Renault Arkana – though its European production could see Mitsubishi Australia pass on the model, in the interest of keeping a low starting price.

This particular ASX is essentially a lightly-restyled Renault Captur – as teaser images have suggested – and as such the European range opens with the same 1.0-litre turbo-petrol three-cylinder engine, matched with a six-speed manual.

Also on the cards is a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder, offered in two states of tune depending on whether it’s optioned with the six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

As previously reported by Drive, the European ASX will also get two electrified options – a traditional hybrid (HEV), and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), both of which are based on a 1.6-litre non-turbo four-cylinder petrol engine and shared with the Renault Captur.

Electric-only driving range for the PHEV has yet to be confirmed, but expect its 10.5kWh battery pack to deliver as much as 60 kilometres of emissions-free driving, being slightly larger than the Captur E-Tech’s 9.8kWh battery (though the ASX's figure could include unusable capacity).

If this ASX does make it to Australia, it’s more likely local buyers will be offered three options: the 1.3-litre turbo with an auto, the 1.6-litre hybrid, and the 1.6-litre plug-in hybrid.

Mitsubishi has only provided a couple of shadowy teaser images of the new-generation ASX, but these renderings by artist Avarvarii provide a glimpse of what we can expect from the small Renault Captur-based SUV.

"In Australia, we are committed to the current-generation ASX and will continue to offer model updates on this generation through its remaining life cycle," a spokesperson for Mitsubishi Australia said, telling Drive the announcement overnight was specific to the European market.

"As for the future, we continue to assess our market and this segment and will have more news on this as details are confirmed."

The European 2023 Mitsubishi ASX is set to make its world debut in September 2022.
