2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE awarded five-star safety rating
The Mercedes-Benz EQE electric car has earnt a five-star safety rating – though ANCAP’s testing of the luxury sedan doesn’t apply to its flagship AMG 53 grade.
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE has been awarded a five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).
Applicable to the EQE300 and EQE350 4Matic variants – but not the flagship high-performance Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 4Matic – Mercedes-Benz’s electric car scored higher than 80 per cent across ANCAP’s four assessment criteria.
The Mercedes-Benz EQE received scores of 95 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection, 92 per cent for Child Occupant Protection, 83 per cent for Vulnerable Road User Protection (pedestrians and cyclists), and 82 per cent for Safety Assist technology.
The EQE’s Adult Occupant Protection rating is the third-highest of any car tested against ANCAP’s 2020-2022 testing protocols, behind only the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Tesla Model Y electric cars.
ANCAP’s technical report shows the Mercedes-Benz EQE achieved full marks in its side impact, oblique pole, far side impact, and rescue and extraction tests – while all other criteria (except the frontal offset) scored within 0.10 points of a perfect score.
The EQE’s Child Occupant Protection rating is the highest of any traditional passenger car on sale – two per cent higher than the petrol-powered Mercedes-Benz C-Class – but lower than utes and SUVs such as the Ford Everest/Ranger, Nissan Pathfinder/Qashqai and Volkswagen Amarok.
Full points were awarded for its dynamic front and side tests, with its restraint installation taking a 0.78 point penalty – while three points were lost for its on-board safety features.
The Vulnerable Road User Protection category saw the Mercedes-Benz take full marks for lower leg impacts and its forward autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system for pedestrians.
Results ranging from good to poor were noted for head impacts across the EQE’s bonnet and windscreen, leading to a score of 18.44 out of 24 points.
An 83 per cent result for the EQE’s Safety Assist technology was awarded after the electric luxury sedan lost one or less points for its autonomous emergency braking junction assist, speed assistance and lane support systems.
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE is now on sale in Australia, priced from $134,900 plus on-road costs for the EQE300 and $154,900 for the EQE350 4Matic.
The range-topping Mercedes-AMG EQE53 4Matic+ is priced from $214,900 but is yet to receive an ANCAP safety rating.
