2023 Mazda 3 price and specs: Up to $2310 more expensive

The Mazda 3 small car has received a technology upgrade – but mild-hybrid power and the manual transmission have been deleted, and prices have risen by up to $2310.

  • 2023 Mazda 3 pricing and specifications
  • Larger screen and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto available
  • Mild-hybrid engines, manual transmission axed
  • Priced from $30,320 plus on-road costs

The updated 2023 Mazda 3 small hatchback and sedan are due in showrooms in July with half as many models as before – and prices up to $2310 higher.

As announced last month, the Mazda 3 is set to gain a technology update with a larger 10.25-inch infotainment screen on some models, and improved fuel efficiency for 2.0-litre models.

But Mazda will simplify the range to cull the 2.0-litre mild-hybrid 'G20e' and innovative 2.0-litre 'SkyActiv-X' supercharged mild-hybrid 'X20' engines – as well as the standard six-speed manual transmission.

Prices have risen by between $1210 and $2310 to account for the new or updated features, with the cheapest model now priced above $30,000 plus on-road costs.

This is the first time in the 20-year history of the Mazda 3 nameplate the base model costs more than $30,000 plus on-road costs. Five years ago, the base-model Mazda 3 manual was listed for $20,490 plus on-road costs.

As previously reported by Drive, the headline upgrade is the introduction of a 10.25-inch infotainment screen as standard on the G25 GT and Astina, or as part of the Vision Technology package on cheaper G20 Pure, G20 Evolve, G25 Evolve SP and G20 Touring models.

It runs the same Mazda Connect software as the 8.8-inch display that was previously standard across the range – and remains standard fitment on the models mentioned above.

The price of the Vision Technology package has risen by $500 to $2000 on the models for which it includes the 10.25-inch screen.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is fitted to G20 Touring models and above – in addition to wired connectivity – as well as wireless phone charging, and USB-C charging ports.

Ceramic Metallic replaces Sonic Silver on the palette of eight exterior colours.

The 2.0-litre non-turbo four-cylinder 'G20' petrol engine in the Pure, Evolve and Touring gains cylinder deactivation and "other improvements to the combustion process" reducing CO2 emissions, and trimming claimed fuel economy by five per cent to 5.8 litres per 100 kilometres for the sedan, or 5.9L/100km for the hatch.

Outputs for the 2.0-litre engine are expected to remain unchanged at 114kW and 200Nm. The 2.5-litre non-turbo four-cylinder 'G25' petrol engine is unchanged, with power and torque ratings of 139kW and 252Nm.

The 2023 Mazda 3 update is due in Australian showrooms this July.
