Video: 2023 Honda Civic Type R to debut on July 21, power boost likely

In a little over a week, Honda will show the next iteration of its storied hot hatch, without any camouflage.

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R will be revealed next Thursday, 21 July 2022, it has been confirmed today.

Honda has used today – the 50th anniversary of the launch of the original Civic – to announce the Civic Type R's reveal, which will be live-streamed on YouTube at 12:00pm AEST next Thursday.

A teaser image previewing the car's front end was released alongside the announcement – revealing the signature red Honda badge of Type R models will live on – as well a a brief teaser video.

Honda USA's press release says the new Civic Type R will be "the most powerful Honda-branded production vehicle ever offered in the US" – suggesting the new car will be more powerful than its predecessor, which previously held the aforementioned title.

While rumours out of Japan suggest there could be a small power increase – to the tune of 7kW to 15kW – matching the old Type R's power output would make the "most powerful Honda production vehicle in the US" statement true, albeit through a tie.

The current Civic Type R develops 228kW/400Nm from a 2.0-litre turbocharged 'K20C' four-cylinder petrol engine in Australia, or 235kW/400Nm in Europe and Japan, due to our lower-quality fuel.

A six-speed manual transmission will be retained for the new model, alongside other performance features likely to include a limited-slip front differential, sticky Michelin tyres and Brembo brakes (but with smaller 19-inch wheels, vs the outgoing car's 20s).
