  • Second-generation coupe uses detuned M3/M4 engine
  • High level of standard equipment on Australian models
  • Priced from $119,900 plus on-road costs

The 2023 BMW M2 is due in Australian showrooms early next year, priced from $119,900 plus on-road costs – or as much as $17,000 more than the outgoing model in its final form.

Revealed this morning, the new M2 builds on the standard new-generation 2 Series coupe with a more powerful twin-turbo six-cylinder engine from BMW M's larger cars, an aggressive new look, high-tech interior, and a sharper chassis.

Prices will start from $119,900 before on-road costs in Australia when local deliveries begin in the first half of next year – with a choice of six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions for no additional cost.

That represents a price rise of $17,000 for the manual and $10,000 for the automatic over the previous M2, which in Competition trim in its final year (2021) cost $102,900 to $109,900 plus on-road costs, depending on transmission.

It's not the most expensive BMW M2 ever sold, as that remains the $147,400 plus on-road costs M2 CS automatic – and it's still cheaper than an entry-level M3, which is priced from $153,500 plus on-road costs. The standard 2023 M240i xDrive is $91,900.

A high level of standard equipment will be fitted to Australian-market models, including a carbon-fibre roof, and a number of comfort and safety features optional in European markets.

Power will come from a 338kW/550Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine derived the M3 and M4, driving the rear wheels through a choice of six-speed manual or eight-speed auto gearboxes.

Highlights under the skin include adaptive suspension, 380mm six-piston front and 370mm single-piston rear steel brakes, 19-inch front and 20-inch rear alloy wheels, and an active rear differential.

Standard features in Australia will include adaptive LED headlights, dual interior screens, heated electric M Sport seats, Vernasca leather upholstery, wireless phone charging, a head-up display, tri-zone climate control, and a Harman Kardon surround sound system.

Standard driver-assistance features include autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and either regular cruise control in manual models, or adaptive cruise cruise control with stop and go in automatic cars.

A $14,500 M Carbon Experience package is available as an option, which includes lightweight M Carbon bucket seats, Merino leather upholstery, a higher top speed limiter (285km/h vs 250km/h), and vouchers for two BMW M performance driving courses.
