2022 Toyota GR 86 could cost less than $35,000 in Australia, dealers claim

The upcoming Toyota GR 86 sports car could start from less than $35,000 when it arrives in Australian showrooms next year, according to a number of dealers canvassed by Drive.  

After US pricing was announced last week, Drive randomly contacted a selection of Toyota showrooms in Melbourne and Sydney to see if they had been given estimates.

“That’s what we’ve been told – about the same price, maybe a bit more [than the outgoing Toyota 86 equivalent]. So probably under $35,000,” a representative for one Toyota dealership said.

Two other retail outlets gave a similar account. However, a fourth Toyota showroom contacted by Drive said there have been no estimates on price given to them by head office as yet, and noted it could be months until pricing is locked in.

Drive has contacted Toyota Australia for comment. This story will be updated with its response.

The current Toyota 86 – which Drive understands is almost sold out – starts from $32,180 before on-road costs, for the entry-level 'GT' variant in Australia.

Power in the 2022 Toyota GR 86 will come from a Subaru-sourced non-turbo 2.4-litre four-cylinder horizontally-opposed 'boxer' engine, sending 173kW/250Nm to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

This is said to deliver a 0-100km/h sprint in a claimed 6.3 seconds.

The GR 86's twin under the skin, the new-generation Subaru BRZ, is priced from $38,990 before on-road costs in Australia for an entry-level manual variant – similar to the strategy taken with the outgoing BRZ and 86, which saw the Subaru command a premium of approximately $3000 over the cheapest Toyota variant.
