2022 SsangYong Korando e-Motion electric SUV detailed

SsangYong's first electric vehicle has debuted in full, with 340km of WLTP range and plenty of technology – but it's not confirmed for Australia.

New details of the 2022 SsangYong Korando e-Motion have been revealed – though an Australian launch for the brand's first electric vehicle (EV) is yet to be confirmed.

Following its initial unveiling alongside SsangYong's future EV plans earlier this year, further details of the electric Korando have been confirmed, including its mechanicals: a 61.5kWh battery built by LG Chem, mated with a 140kW/360Nm electric motor powering the front wheels.

SsangYong estimates 339km of driving range according to Europe's WLTP test cycle. A figure for maximum DC charging power isn't given, though with the vehicle capable of a 20 to 80 per cent fast charge in 33 minutes via a CCS socket, it's likely in the region of about 120kW.

No 0-100km/h time is given, though SsangYong quotes a 163km/h top speed in its home market.

Differentiating the Korando E-Motion from the standard model are unique front and rear bumpers (with a closed-off front grille), aero-optimised 17-inch wheels, and blue accents across a number of the body panels. LED headlights and tail-lights are standard in certain markets, while an aluminium bonnet is now standard to save weight.

Inside, occupants are presented with a 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and satellite navigation, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. There's a 'shift-by-wire' gear selector between the passengers, along with an electric parking brake.

Other available features include dual-zone climate control, wireless phone charging, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats (with 32.5 degrees of recline), heated steering wheel, and an eight-way electric driver's seat.

SsangYong Europe quotes 551 litres of boot space – identical to the standard, petrol- or diesel-powered model.

Available active safety technologies include autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, auto high beam, driver attention warning and Safe Distance Warning.

Available as an option in South Korea is an optional heat pump, which repurposes thermal energy from the powertrain for the air conditioning system – extending the official driving range claim in its home market by 1km at "room temperature" (but, bizarrely, lowering by 2km in cold weather).

The 2022 SsangYong Korando e-Motion will go on sale in Europe in January 2022, with prices in Spain to start from €36,000 for the entry-level Urban, increasing to €39,000 for the range-topping Limited (though it's not clear if this is before or after government subsidies).

For reference, that's 15.6 per cent more than the most expensive diesel-powered Korando on offer – suggesting that, if sold in Australia, the Korando could command a price below $50,000 drive-away. This is yet to be confirmed, however, with exact pricing varying depending on market.

SsangYong has previously indicated the Korando e-Motion is "under evaluation" for Australia. Drive has contacted the company for an update on the electric SUV's local potential.
