2022 Mercedes-AMG SL to replace GT Roadster in sports car line-up, CEO confirms
Mr Schiemer also revealed the upcoming luxury convertible would be offered with electrified powertrain options.
The Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster (shown at bottom) will be axed to make way for the upcoming Mercedes-AMG SL, according to company CEO Philipp Schiemer.
Speaking to Car and Driver over the Easter long weekend, Mr Schiemer also confirmed earlier rumours the all-new SL would be offered with 48-volt and plug-in hybrid powertrain options.
The flagship SL 73 4Matic+ – which will likely sit above a range of four-cylinder options and a non-hybrid V8 in the line-up – is expected to mate a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with a 150kW rear electric motor, giving power figures in excess of 600kW.
Spy photos published earlier this year by CarAdvice confirm the car will have an interior derived from the latest S-Class, with a large central touchscreen (above).
A spokesperson for Mercedes-Benz in Australia was unable to confirm the model for the local market when approached by CarAdvice, however said: “we’re definitely interested in the prospect of an SL, and what that could mean for the brand going forward.
"While we can’t confirm anything at this stage, the long-running nameplate is an exciting opportunity for Mercedes-Benz and AMG."
The 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL is expected to make its full debut later this year, with an Australian launch likely in the first half of 2022.
