2022 Ford Everest to get epic turbo diesel V6, class-leading power and torque
The new-generation Ford Everest four-wheel-drive will have the option of the turbo diesel V6 from the Ford F-150 when it goes on sale in Australia next year.
Holidaymakers, campers, and outback adventurers could soon have a new dilemma on their hands.
Ford is about to deliver more power than has ever been seen before in the ute-derived four-wheel-drive wagon class.
The 2022 Ford Everest four-wheel-drive is poised to get the same turbo diesel V6 as the new-generation Ford Ranger ute which, in turn, has been adapted from the iconic Ford F-150 in the US.
While Ford Australia is yet to confirm details, Drive understands the 2022 Ford Everest four-wheel-drive has received the same critical chassis change to the front end to accommodate the bigger V6 engine.
It means the new Ford Everest will also have better stability on-road and better clearance when off-road.
But the big news is the amount of V6 turbo diesel power and torque available in a class that has customarily been dominated by underpowered four-cylinder turbo diesels.
Ford is yet to announce power and torque outputs for the Ranger version of the Ford F-150’s TDV6.
However, in the US, the “PowerStroke” 3.0-litre turbo diesel V6 has the equivalent of 186kW/597Nm.
Backed by a 10-speed auto – to deliver brisk acceleration and aid open-road fuel economy – the 2022 Ford Everest TDV6 promises to be like no other vehicle in its segment.
The current Ford Everest has a choice of a single-turbo 3.2-litre five-cylinder diesel (143kW/470Nm) or a twin-turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel (157kW/500Nm).
As with the 2022 Ford Ranger ute unveiled today, the twin-turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel and 10-speed auto is expected to become the standard powertrain combination, while the single-turbo 3.0-litre V6 diesel is expected to become the premium option.
The ageing 3.2-litre five-cylinder turbo diesel has been consigned to the history books.
By comparison the outputs of the Ford Everest and its rivals are as follows:
2022 Ford Everest TDV6: 186kW/597Nm (3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel), output TBC
2022 Ford Everest TT2.0: 157kW/500Nm (2.0-litre twin turbo four-cylinder diesel), output TBC
2021 Ford Everest 3.2 T5: 143kW/470Nm (3.2-litre five-cylinder turbo diesel), to be discontinued
2021 Isuzu MU-X: 140kW/450Nm (3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel)
2021 Toyota Fortuner: 150kW/500Nm (2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel)
2021 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport: 133kW/430Nm (2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel)
