2022 BMW new cars

BMW will be easing into the new year after a busy end to 2021, which saw the release of at least eight new or updated models, including the all-electric iX3 and iX SUVs.

The first arrival should be the mid-size i4 electric sedan, which will be offered in two variants: the rear-wheel-drive i4 eDrive40, priced from $99,990 before on-road costs, and the performance-focused i4 M50, priced from $124,900 before on-road costs.

The i4 eDrive40 is powered by a single 250kW/430Nm electric motor on the rear axle – paired with an 80.7kWh lithium-ion battery for 590km of WLTP driving range – with the M50 stepping up to dual electric motors and up to 400kW.

The BMW M135i xDrive is expected to join the i4 M50 early in the new year with revised suspension and chassis components. Pricing for the hot hatch will be confirmed prior to launch.

The car maker will also celebrates fifty years of its BMW M performance division in 2022, and will mark the occasion with a slew of performance models. Australian buyers will be able to option their M cars with classic BMW Motorsport branding first used on a BMW race car in 1973.

New BMW M reveals are set to include the M3 Competition Touring wagon, the new-generation M2 coupe, and the production XM SUV with a high-performance plug-in hybrid system – though these models aren't expected in Australia until early 2023.
