  • Advanced digital matrix LED headlights added
  • Priced from $273,400 plus on-road costs, up $13,523

The 2022 Audi S8 is now on sale in Australia, with a new look and more technology – and a $13,000 price rise.

Available to order now from $273,400 plus on-road costs – $13,523 higher than the pre-update model, last offered by Audi in 2021 – the updated S8 gains a revised appearance, new headlights, and some new tech features.

The S8 will continue to be joined by at least one cheaper 'standard' A8 variant, expected in showrooms before the end of the year – likely in carry-over '50 TDI' form, with a V6 diesel engine. Details of this model will be announced later.

New for the updated S8 are design touches like a reworked front grille and new bumpers, plus a set of advanced digital matrix LED headlights, each housing about 1.3 million micro-mirrors which "break down the light into tiny pixels", according to Audi.

"This allows it to be controlled with maximum precision. The design is based on a technology ... [similar to that] used in many video projectors. This makes several new functions possible, including advanced coming/leaving home sequences, glare-free high-beam and lane, orientation, and marking lights for highways," according to Audi Australia.

More advanced OLED tail-lights feature at the rear, while on the safety front there's now a night vision system as standard equipment.

Power continues to come from a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V8, which sends 420kW and 800Nm to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox – good for a 3.8-second 0-100km/h top speed, and 250km/h capped top speed.

The engine is fitted with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, which can 'recover' up to 8kW when coasting or under light throttle, and is claimed to be capable of saving up to 0.8 litres of fuel per 100km, when combined with the auto start-stop system.

Combined with cylinder deactivation, Audi Australia claims the facelifted S8 consumes 10.5L/100km in lab testing designed to simulate combined (city and highway) driving.

Standard features include 21-inch wheels, adaptive air suspension, active anti-roll bars, red brake calipers, a 10.1-inch centre touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Valcona leather upholstery, a 23-speaker stereo, and more. A broader list of features is below.

The 2022 Audi S8 range is now available to order. The regular A8 range is due in local showrooms towards the end of the year.

Editor's note: While this vehicle has been released in the second half of the year, when cars typically roll over into the next model year, Audi Australia says the updated S8 is a Model Year 2022 vehicle.
