2019 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe spied
The front- and all-wheel drive BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will make its debut next week.
The upcoming BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has been snapped in testing, ahead of a reveal on July 24.
Based on the same UKL platform as the 1 Series and Mini models, the 2 Series Gran Coupe is a style-focused rival to the Mercedes-Benz CLA.
Based on the big wheels, big brakes and big air intakes at the front, we'd suggest this tester is an M235i xDrive model. As with the just-released M135i, the M235i is expected to be powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine making 225kW and 450Nm.
Thanks to its xDrive all-wheel drive system, the car should be capable of sending 50 per cent of power to the rear axle. Although the M135i will hit 100km/h in 4.8 seconds, the slightly heavier M235i could be slightly slower.
There aren't too many surprises to be found externally, where the nose looks like a slightly sportier take on the 1 Series design. Down back, the taillights borrow heavily from the 8 Series and 8 Series Gran Coupe, with slim housings and a slick LED signature.
Twin exhaust pipes flank a diffuser-style bumper insert, and the boot lid is garnished with a slim lip spoiler. In keeping with its 'Gran Coupe' badging, the roofline is more aggressively raked than that of a conventional sedan.
Although the 'Gran Coupe' will be front- and all-wheel drive, BMW hasn't confirmed whether the next-generation 2 Series coupe will follow in its wheel tracks and make the switch to the UKL architecture.
BMW will reveal the 2 Series Gran Coupe in full on July 24. Stay tuned for more.
