2016 Toyota HiLux images leaked

If the current generation Toyota HiLux doesn't quite whet your big American truck appetite, then the upcoming successor could be your lucky ticket.

Images claiming to be of Toyota's next-generation workhorse have been leaked on industry website Autoblog Greece.

A front-end and rear-end shot reveal a boldly executed styling brief on the next-generation model, similar to US-designed pick-ups like the Toyota Tacoma. The updated HiLux is due to land in Australian showrooms around the end of the year, after almost 10 years of the current iteration.

On the new model, the front grille is more prominent and upright than before, with sharper headlights and large air intakes. At the rear resides a familiar flush tailgate with a centre-mounted handle. Absent from the tailgate is the current reversing camera that is found on the current-generation model, meaning it has potentially been relocated to another space or integrated into the tailgate handle.

What the images don't reveal is whether the model photographed is a single cab, space cab or dual cab derivative. Irrespective of that, the HiLux is said to grow in proportion compared with model currently on sale, which features inferior tray and interior proportions compared with class leaders.

What's also set to change is the HiLux's ageing 3.0-litre diesel engine, which will be upgraded for a more powerful and efficient diesel package to rival the likes of the Ford Ranger and Holden Colorado.

The new-look is set to punctuate a more car-like interior and driving experience found on the next-generation HiLux. Sharing a similar philosophy will be the upcoming Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi Triton utes.
