Toyota Australia has confirmed that its return to the world of rear-wheel-drive sports cars will start at $29,990.
Announced today at the Australian lauch of the new 86 coupe, buyers will have two options: the $29,990 entry-level GT, and the top-shelf GTS, at $35,490.
"The 86 is meant to be enjoyed by as many driving enthusiasts as possible, and our pricing will extend its appeal to people who never imagined they could afford such a fun car," Toyota Australia's Matthew Callachor said.
On price, the 86's closest sports rivals in Australia are a largely front-wheel affair, including the $23,390 Cerato Koup, $23,990 Veloster (the Turbo model is on the way), $34,990 CR-Z, $38,990 Golf GTI, Mazda's $39,490 3 MPS, and Subaru's $39,990 WRX.
Other sub-$50k rivals include the Mazda MX-5 (the standout rear-wheel-drive alternative here), Megane RS 250, the Scirocco R, the Lancer Ralliart, the MINI Cooper S and the upcoming Focus ST.
Mechanical Package
Both model grades are powered by a new 2.0 litre boxer engine, producing 147kW (100hp per litre) at 7000rpm and 205Nm of torque at 6600. The engine redlines at 7450rpm.
Developed as part of Toyota's partnership with Subaru, the engine also features Toyota's D4-S direct-injection technology.
Positioned low in the 1222kg body, the engine combines with a 400mm driver hip-point to give the 86 an ultra-low centry of gravity of just 460mm.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a limited-slip differential (except for the auto GT), and two transmissions can be had in both trim grades: a six-speed manual or a six-speed auto, with the GTS getting paddle shifters.
Acceleration: In manual form, Toyota says the 86 will hit 100km/h in 7.6 seconds, while the automatic model will get there in 8.2 seconds.
Suspension is MacPherson struts up front with a multi-link rear.
For the GT, braking is managed by 277x24mm ventilated discs at the front and 286x10mm solid discs at the rear. In GTS form, there's ventilated discs all-round, measuring 294x24mm at the front and 290x18mm at the rear.
The 86's wheel and tyre package sees the GT sitting on 16x6.5 alloy wheels wrapped in 205/55 R16 tyres, and the GTS on 17x7J alloys with 215/45 R17 tyres. A full-size spare is fitted in both grades.
The 86's dimensions make it wider than a Toyota Rukus, an overall length and wheelbase shorter than a Corolla hatch, and with a roof height lower than a three-door Yaris.
Features
Standard equipment includes seven airbags, a five-mode stability control system, traction control, anti-skid brakes, 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, air-conditioning, CD sound system, daytime running lamps (DRLs) and a multi-information display.
The 86 GTS adds 17-inch alloy wheels, a 6.1-inch display screen, satellite navigation with live traffic updates, auto-levelling HID headlamps, leather-accented front seats, dual-zone climate-control air-conditioning, aluminium pedals, LED DRLs and red stitching highlights.
