The British Land Rover was established in 1948 by the Wilks Brothers with the launch of Series 1. The Original Land Rover’s was well known for being an all-terrain vehicle with high durability due to the type of metal used (WWII scraps). Land Rovers presence in Australia has been strong with the Defender, Freelander 2 and Discovery 4 all currently available. Along with Jaguar, Land Rover is owned by Tata Motors (India).
The first introduction of my old Land Rover Defender was brief, without too much detail or history. In this instalment, we delve into the story of buying and modifying the Defender, and some of the adventures we've had since. After my 1971 Series IIA Land Rover – my daily driver at the time – failed its annual roadworthy test in spectacular form many years ago, I decided to get something a little bit newer...
We've tested the new Defender off-road and now it's time to take a look at how it performs on-road around town.
The last example of Land Rover's legendary off-roader is a bona-fide modern classic.
Is this new Defender actually any good off-road? Well, there's only one way to truly find out.
The Land Rover Discovery Sport is no stranger to Australians, having gone on sale here in 2015. The Mercedes-Benz GLB, however, is much newer having gone on sale in 2020. Both occupy the medium-SUV class, and both fall into the ‘prestige’ sub-segment of the category. So, which is the better of these two flexible family freighters?
Land Rover claim this Defender is its most capable off-roader to date, we test their claim with the challenging Mt Walker hill climb.
After 3 months of testing we say goodbye to the British brands mid-size luxury SUV.
Land Rover is a brand that sells itself on adventure. I don't believe that can be contested. From its depictions in media and communications through to every interactive touch point, be it online or in physical manifestations, this seems to be the case.
As the first sometimes seven-seaters in the medium prestige SUV race, which of these two versatile haulers fits family life the best?
We can't do this comparison 'in the flesh' just yet, but that's not going to stop our Off-road Editor from carrying it out in his head.
Going off-road is great fun. Something off-road capable can open up a lot of doors to places you were otherwise unable to visit. It changes a vehicle from being a conduit between A and B, into a ticket to adventure. But, having a proper 4WD does come with compromises. Take it from me: while great off-road, my own 4WD is abhorrent to park, loud and noisy, and is eons away from being a capable commuter...
Jaguar Land Rover has axed its upcoming all-electric Range Rover 'Road Rover' project, according to a new report from Automotive News Europe. Citing an investor call with the brand’s Chief Financial Officer Adrian Mardell, the report also claims the Jaguar J-Pace electric SUV had been pulled from development...
The 2022 Land Rover Defender will soon have the option of a powerful new 5.0-litre supercharged V8 – as part of a broader range expansion – the British brand has confirmed. Ending months of speculation, Land Rover's first-ever supercharged Defender V8 is due in Australian showrooms from July priced from around $200,000 plus on-road costs...
There's little doubt our expectations for new cars are higher than ever. With every passing year, autonomous driving becomes more of a widespread reality, five-star ANCAP ratings are harder to obtain and standard equipment lists grow longer. Put simply: we crave cars that are smarter (and safer) than we are...
If you consider Land Rover’s new Defender is too refined and dignified to carry on the tradition of England’s most celebrated off-roader, then we’ve got good news for you. The original Land Rover Defender is returning, albeit for an extremely short production run as the Land Rover Defender Works V8 Trophy...
I fell in love with the Evoque at first sight and knew I had to have one the moment I saw the flush-mount door handles come out the first time (typical male). I bought it new at the end of 2019 and found the buying process really pleasant...
I purchased the Velar as an upgrade to a Jaguar XE. I loved the look of the Velar and I eagerly waited the seven months until it arrived in March 2019. I should note that I upgrade cars like people change their underwear. I have owned 25 cars in eight years and I tend to drive to enjoy them before looking for another new model...
OK, I get that this isn't a real car, but boy it's some piece of engineering. I test-drove the new Defender a few weeks back and it was fun. I kind of prefer my Disco 4 to be honest but I get the appeal of the new Defender, it's very cool. So, rather than sign on the line for a new Defender ,I went ahead and bought a LEGO one...
"The soft-roader for genuine 4WD tracks." All the reviews I read prior to purchase said "a genuine Land Rover off-road". I have a 2011 base-model 2.2 diesel, auto ’box (six-speed). It's very, very comfortable on the highway at legal speeds, and would be equally comfy at illegal speeds. This is most notable if you're doing over 500km in a day – one isn't exhausted...
