Trent's adventure toward Mudgee starts at the Blue Mountains and gets even more picturesque from there - here's how to get there!
Drive screens on Channel 9 at 12.30 pm each Saturday. The full episode will be available to video on 9Now after it airs.
Our drive took us from Sydney up into Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, approximately 100km west of the CBD. From there, our drive to the 4WD Park covers just over 200km.
Leaving Katoomba, we drove along the Great Western Highway (A32) through Mount Victoria, before pointing the Navara toward Wallerawang and our first stop at Pearson’s Lookout.
The A32 becomes the B55 as you head through Wallerawang. Through Blackman’s Flat and Cullen Bullen, you’re on the Castlereagh Highway. That road takes you all the way into Capertee, where you can fill up with fuel, before turning onto Glen Davis Road and the short run to the lookout.
Heading out of the lookout, we turned. Right back onto Glen Davis Road, and down into the floor of the valley on the run down into the Glen Davis Works Shale Oil Mine. It’s an easy drive for any 4WD, and the abandoned mine is well signposted. You can organise a guided tour throughout the year.
After you’ve spent some time exploring the mine, head back west again the way you came in, turning right at the fork in the road, onto Glen Alice Road, heading in the direction of Kandos and Rylstone. You’ll pass through Glen Alice, Bogee, Mount Marsden and finally Dabee, before arriving in Rylstone.
From Rylstone on Day 2, you have two options to head over to Mudgee, both equally picturesque. We took the run around Lake Windemere, which offers some beautiful scenery, once again on the B55. The other option is to head North out Rylstone and run through Camboon, Monivae, Lue and Havilah.
From Mudgee, the Central West 4WD Park is a short, 30-minute drive out into the hills. Take the B55 out of town, turn left onto Hill End Road at the famous Mudgee Honey Haven store, and then through Grattai and Avisford before you see the signs for the park on your right.
At the end of your trip, you can head back the way you came through Mudgee, or take the alternative route back to Sydney through Hill End.
