2018 Citroen C4 Cactus Exclusive long-term review: Farewell
Launch Review | 8 Aug 2019

6.9

Love or hate its looks, the Cactus is a fun little thing to punt around town. It's really showing its age, however, and lacks the connectivity and tech befitting of its premium price tag.

The 2018 Citroen C4 Cactus has been a polarising car in the Melbourne office. Whether it’s the crossover's funky design, those trademark AirBumps, or the way it’s been specced, it’s received a lot of attention.

Long Term Report | 26 Dec 2018
Being a small crossover, one of the most important and regular tasks our Citroen C4 Cactus long-termer will have to complete is the daily urban commute – and so far, we're relatively impressed.

Opinion | 21 Jul 2016
You may have seen our hugely popular list of cars that Aussies should be buying, but aren’t. And while it hasn’t done anything to improve the fortunes of the Peugeot 308 – despite our vehement insistence that it is one of the cars that should get small car purchasers through the door – the response was excellent.

2016 Citroen C4 Cactus Exclusive 1.6 E-HDi review
Owner Review | 20 Jan 2017
I've had my Cactus for nearly a year now, it's just had its 15000k service and I thought now is a good time to offer my longer term thoughts on this controversial car. My original review mentioned a few minor issues I won’t rehash but I will talk about the much maligned transmission. The transmission is part of a package that provides me fuel economy hovering around 4.2L per 100ks, and still offers quite a spirited drive, so it's hard to dislike it much. Around town it can forget what it's doing from time to time, but on the highway it is a dream. You adapt to it and it to you, and beyond the initial stages I’ve never had any problems. I recently took it to Sydney via the Hume and back via the coast. Taking the freeways from Malvern in Melbourne, to Kings Cross, Sydney used one $45 tank of diesel, with about 80ks on the range to spare. I did all the driving, and let me tell you the seats really are wonderful. I opted for leather, which is certainly worth the extra! Being a Citroen its handling is strong, with tight and decisive steering feel and quite a decent ride quality. One of my favourite things about the car is the glass roof, it creates such an open and airy feel, and being thermal glass, lets in no heat. My car is parked outside at home and work, and somehow the glass keeps it cooler than a metal roof! I assume it's magic. Along those lines, Citroen really know how to make an Air Con. It can be 40 degrees and the car fully loaded but that A/C will have you shivering in no time. This was also true of my DS3 Dstyle. For any other Cactus owners out there who have been frustrated by the lagy centre tablet, pop into your nearest dealer and they can upgrade the system under warranty. Had it done last week and it is much faster. I have dealt with 4 Citroen dealers in Melbourne & Geelong over the years and 2 of them have been dreadful in terms of customer service. The other 2 fantastic. Sadly, Citroen's dealer network is not large, so if you get a bad one, it can be a hike to the next. Citroen provides 6 year warranty and roadside. A roofer’s nail punctured one of my tires in its first month, so I can attest to the speed & quality of the roadside service! The Cactus is not a luxury car, and for some it wouldn't be a practical car, what it is is a concept car that made it into production. It is a concept. From ground up, it follows its concept, with lightweight build to keep fuel economy to the smell of any oil rag, to the "self-protecting" air bumps. It is a cactus turned into a car. I love it, not everyone does, but in my experience the positivity outweighs any snide remarks. I've even had someone approach me wanting to take photos of it, and after chucking an illegal right turn had a police officer reach in to feel the dash after admiring it! He still gave me the ticket though.
2016 Citroen C4 Cactus Exclusive 1.2i Puretech Review
Owner Review | 16 Jun 2016
I first came across the Citroen C4 Cactus approximately in 2013 online about this new car possibly going into production, being a Citroen fan for many years I knew I wanted it from the get go, I managed to get a first glimpse at it at the 2014 Geneva motorshow and again at the 2015 Paris motorshow, I knew I wanted it but the question was when, finally ordered in at the Sept 15 launch and had it by March 2016. I loved it as soon as I got into it, I opted for the Habana cloth interior that feels like a 70s sofa, with the glass roof which I thought might be an issue not having a cover but on a 40 degrees day it defintely proved otherwise it really does block out the heat and ofcourse the black alloys, the car looked a million bucks, every time I drove it people got curious, my friends warmed up to it and couldn't believe the features it had, I love the cabin space and room due to having the airbag in the roof it makes the dash not as bulky and reminds you of a car from the 70s, the glove box is a great size and very conventional, the leather strap door handles look great, the technology is really good, great reversing camera, and the DAB is a blessing, the ride is smooth and the manual gearbox is punchy and the engine has a nice growl about it and surprisingly really good on fuel and I average at about 5.2, head room is fantastic and all round vision is excellent, the seats are very comfortable and I can assure you no back pain on long drives. Rear passengers can also sit comfortably but if you are over 6ft you may want to stay in the front seat. The details inside and out serve a purpose, the Airbump technology for car park or trolley dents or even if you bumped the rear as I did into my sisters car, there was no damage at all, the little rubber dots on top of the glovebox grip ipads or a laptop! Things I wish the car had... auto power windows, not a deal breaker but it is somewhat annoying after having other Citroen's, folding power mirrors would of been a added greatness, a mirror for the passenger would of been a treat for my female companions, maybe a better hifi system, it seems Citroen never get this right especially if you like your tunes, the tablet that controls everything is a little clunky, at times it boots up immediately other times it may take up to 20secs and I don't think it has anything to do with how long the car has not been started either, the cup holder is annoying, no idea why there is only one and then a square shaped one next to it that is pointless, the back windows pop out and look really cool and it does not bother me that they don't wind down, the good thing I have noticed is that if you have them open you don't get a shudder noise as you normally would with a conventional back window and airflow is just as good. Overall the pros definitely outway the cons, if you really want something different that is spacious, fun to drive and pleasant to sit in and take in the atmosphere you should look at this car, 6 years unlimited km warranty and roadside assist along with capped price servicing is a big win.
2016 Citroen C4 Cactus Exclusive 1.6 E-HDi Review
Owner Review | 21 May 2016
I might have been a bit keen on the Cactus from the first time I heard about it. Having been out in Europe for a while before arriving here, I was all set to buy one! I ordered it in the launch week back in September 2015, with a delivery in Feb 16. I don't drive manual, and I was keen on the pros of the auto: diesel, push-button transmission, aircraft style handbrake, bench seat and centre armrest. I also optioned the tan leather, black alloys and glass roof. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, design wise, but I find it incredibly beautiful, inside and out. When I showed a friend a picture after I ordered it, she laughed, but even she, a committed Audi fan, warmed up to it after I got it. On the inside, the dash is just so freaking cool! I love the detail, the high quality finishes and the soft leather. The seats are the most comfortable I've come across in a car. The digital screen with the speedo etc is great and clear. The steering wheel is comfortable and functional. The centre "tablet" that controls almost all the car's functions from the radio to the A/C could be better. It is clear, the menus reasonably straight forward but it requires a firm touch and its response time can be a little slow. Particularly when turning the car on, about a third of the time it can take 5-10 seconds to kick on properly. The reversing camera is clear and very handy, as are the parking sensors. Aside from this, it has digital radio, and quite good speakers. Much has been written about the robotised manual gearbox, and frankly I had very low expectations about this part of the car. Having said that, both the driver and the transmission learn to work together very quickly and from then on lurchy or sharp gearshifts are almost non-existent. And certainly the higher gears changes are smooth and quick. Overtaking on freeways is a breeze. This car can really move. This is not to say the transmission is perfect, it is merely fine. Sometimes it does forget what it's doing. Enter the paddle shifters, which can make life much easier. It's quite fun to drive, though. The transmission being a little raw gives a bit of an edge to how it drives. Handling is top notch, ride isn't "Citroen soft" but for a small SUV it's pretty good, as good or better than most in the class. It's equipped with stop/start technology that is the best I've come across. It's intuitive, with the turn ons both smooth and quiet. If the weather is hot, and the AC on, it won't turn off so as to get the cabin cool, same goes when it is cold out, the heater on but the engine not yet heated up. Fuel economy is insanely low. I drive every day in the heaviest of Melbourne's peak hour traffic and my economy is averaging about 4.7l. Get it on the highway and it drops to 3-3.5l - I recently took a road trip to the country. About 700ks return. It cost about $30 in diesel. This is not meant to be a high end car, and does miss some of the latest safety gear, but features all the basics and a few more. The front airbags are in the roof which means the glove box is huge. It's a French car so it has but one cupholder. It's reasonably sized and huge step up from the useless one my DS3 had, but still not great. Cabin storage, otherwise is ample and the boot is huge. The running lights are cool, and the headlights strong. It has cornering fog lights also. Two odd things that annoy me are that the electric windows don't have auto up or down and the passenger sun visor has no mirror. Small inconveniences but odd none the less. The rear windows pop out, rather than wind down. About this, I couldn't care less. It's all to save weight, which considering the fuel economy, seems a worthy trade off to me! I think French cars have, in the last decade, really upped their game when it comes to design and build quality. And Citroen Aus (the longest continuously sold brand in Australia for all you haters) backs this with a 6 year warranty, 6 year roadside assist and capped price servicing. Having had a roofers nail rip open one of my tyres a few weeks ago, I can attest to the quality and usefulness of both the roadside assist and the tyre pressure warning system. This car turns heads, draws questions, smiles and the odd jape but I truly love it. It fits my personality, my style, and my lifestyle.
