Know your 911 – a guide to all 2023 Porsche 911 variants

In life, it’s not a matter of choosing ‘a’ Porsche 911, but which one of the 25-variants best suits your needs, dreams and budget.

Since 1963 the Porsche 911 has been considered the benchmark sports car. It’s a car that is as well known for its performance prowess as it is for its statement value.

To find yourself behind the wheel of the iconic Porsche is a significant milestone, regardless of generation, but with a lineup that now spans 25 variants (and a mighty gap of $339,200 between most 'affordable' to bank-account crushing expensive before options), which 992-911 has your name on it?

911 Carrera

The entry point to the 911 range has never been faster or wider.

Unlike previous generations, all 992 911 Carrera models feature the same widebody format, thus all cars share a 4519mm length, 1852mm width and 2450mm wheelbase.

The 911 Carrera is powered by a 283kW/450Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat six, which drives the rear wheels through an eight-speed PDK (dual-clutch automatic) transmission. Performance is brisk, with a claimed 0-100km/h time of just 4.2-seconds.

Pricing starts from $259,100 before options and on-road costs.

911 Carrera Cabriolet

A full convertible version of the Carrera, the 911 Carrera Cabriolet offers the same engine and driveline but weighs 70kg more (1466kg coupe vs 1536kg cabrio). As such, the 0-100km/h acceleration time climbs marginally to 4.4-seconds.

Pricing starts from $280,700 before options and on-road costs.

911 Carrera T

For a more ‘pure’ driving experience, the Carrera T (T stands for Touring) uses the power and driveline from the Carrera, but is offered with a seven-speed manual transmission and torque vectoring as standard.

You can remove the rear seats and add lightweight glass for an even more sporting experience.

Pricing starts from $280,600 before on-roads.

911 Carrera 4

The handling prowess of an all-wheel-drive 911 starts with the 911 Carrera 4. Here, the outputs from the 3.0-litre six are the same as a Carrera, but the 0-100km/h acceleration time drops to 4.2-seconds thanks to the additional pull and grip from the front wheels.

Pricing starts from $276,500 before options and on-road costs.

911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet

Full soft-top version of the Carrera 4 coupe, that adds 70kg of weight over the coupe.

Pricing starts from $298,400 before options and on-road costs.

911 Carrera S

Adding an S to the badge sees power jump by 48kW to 331kW, and torque climb 80Nm to 530Nm. Performance improves over the 911 Carrera, with the 911 Carrera S able to sprint from 0-100km/h in 3.7 seconds.

Pricing starts from $298,100 before options and on-road costs.

911 Carrera S Cabriolet

The 911 Carrera S Cabriolet uses its extra oomph to deliver a 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.9-seconds, faster than a 911 Carrera coupe.

Pricing starts from $319,800 before options and on-road costs.

911 Carrera 4S

Want more power and all-wheel-drive? Then the 911 Carrera 4S is your ticket to a blistering 3.6-second dash from 0-100km/h.

Pricing starts from $315,500 before options and on-road costs.

911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet

Again, a full drop-top version of the car above, with the roof in all 992 cabriolet models capable of opening and closing at speeds up to 50km/h in just 12-seconds.

Pricing starts from $337,400 before options and on-road costs.

911 Targa 4

Offering the best of both worlds, between closed coupe and open-top driving, the iconic Porsche 911 Targa starts with the 283kW, all-wheel drive Targa 4. Worth noting is the Targa 4 is priced identically to the Carrera 4 Cabriolet.

Pricing starts from $298,400 before options and on-road costs.

911 Targa 4S

As with the Targa 4, the 911 Targa 4S is priced the same as it's fully convertible spec-mate, the Carrera 4S cabriolet.

Performance is quoted the same too, with both wind-blown 4S variants capable of a 3.8-second 0-100km/h sprint. The Targa does weigh an extra 40kg, however.

Pricing starts from $337,400 before options and on-road costs.

911 Carrera GTS

Another of only five 911 variants available as a manual, the 911 Carrera GTS sees power jump over the Carrera S by 22kW to 353kW and torque step up 40Nm to 570Nm.

This gives the rear-drive (manual) 911 Carrera GTS a sprint time of 4.1-seconds, slower only because it relies on the driver to get everything right!

And where we said every 911 shares the same footprint, it's correct, although the GTS is technically 14mm longer due to a slight change in the aerodynamic signature of the front bumper.

Pricing starts from $334,900 before options and on-road costs.

911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet

Enjoy open-top, rear-drive thrills with just 3.6-seconds separating you from standstill and 100km/h. With identical hardware to the Carrera GTS coupe, the GTS Cab is the fastest rear-drive convertible in the Porsche stable (the Boxster Spyder has a 0-100km/h time of 4.4-seconds).

Pricing starts from $368,100 before options and on-road costs.

911 Carrera 4 GTS

The most powerful 911 Carrera with the most amount of grip, the 911 Carrera 4 GTS uses its 353kW and eight-speed PDK transmission to deliver an astonishing 3.3-second 0-100km/h sprint time.

Pricing starts from $354,200 before options and on-road costs.

911 Carrera 4 GTS Cabriolet

Ticking all the boxes for a 911 Carrera delivers you this brilliant machine. With big power, all-wheel drive and an automatic convertible top, the 911 Carrera 4 GTS Cabriolet is offers grand-touring experience backed by 3.5-second 0-100km/h performance.

Pricing starts from $387,700 before options and on-road costs.

911 Targa 4 GTS

Priced the same as the 911 Carrera 4 GTS, the Targa 4 GTS matches all the capabilities of the convertible but with the clever folding hard-top feature of the Targa.

Pricing starts from $387,700 before options and on-road costs.

911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design (Targa)

Based on the 911 Targa 4 GTS, the Edition 50 Years Porsche Design is a limited build (750 units worldwide) celebration of the Porsche Design brand. Offering the same 353kW/570Nm powerplant and all-wheel drive, the bespoke model features unique interior trim and other components, and is available in any colour you like, as long as it is black.

Pricing starts from $426,100 before options and on-road costs.

911 Turbo

All 911 variants may be turbocharged, but only the 911 Turbo carries the name. This is the icon, and it lives up to its reputation.

The engine grows from 3.0-litres to 3.7-litres with output stepping up again to a massive 427kW and 750Nm, a rise of 74kW and 180Nm over 911 Carrera GTS models, with the 0-100km/h time dropping to a body crushing 2.8-seconds.

The Turbo is wider too, at 1900mm the 911 Turbo lineup is 48mm fatter than a regular Carrera or Targa.

Pricing starts from $431,000 before options and on-road costs.

911 Turbo Cabriolet

If you're going to go fast, why not do it with the top down?

The 911 Turbo Cabriolet offers all the performance benefits of the Turbo, but with an open air experience. The 70kg weight increase over the coupe doesn't matter at all, with the cabrio's 0-100km/h sprint time equalling that of the coupe.

Pricing starts from $452,000 before options and on-road costs.

911 Turbo S

The only thing quicker than a Turbo, is the Turbo S.

Power peaks at 478kW and torque at 800Nm. This is enough to propel the all-wheel drive 911 Turbo S with rocket-like performance from 0-100km/h in just 2.7 seconds.

Pricing starts from $506,200 before options and on-road costs.

911 Turbo S Cabriolet

Porsche know how to make a fast hairdryer.

With the same running gear as the coupe, the 992 911 Turbo S Cabrio can run from 0-100km/h in 2.8 seconds, with aerodynamics rather than weight the only thing holding the droptop back 0.1-seconds.

Pricing starts from $527,500 before options and on-road costs.

911 Sport Classic

Featuring a de-tuned version of the 3.7-litre flat-six from the 911 Turbo, the 911 Sport Classic is the most powerful rear-drive 911 currently available.

With 405kW and 600Nm, driven through a seven-speed manual transmission, the Sport Classic is designed to offer a traditional 911 experience with a modern and exclusive twist.

And with pricing starting from $598,300 before options and on-road costs, it's also the most expensive 911 currently available.

911 GT3

A race car for the road, the 911 GT3 is the car you can drive to, from and at the track day of your choice.

Here, the 911 ditches turbochargers for a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six that pushes 375kW at a wailing 8400rpm, through a manual (or PDK) transmission to the rear wheels only.

You can personalise and accessorise your GT3 to make a clean or bold statement, with no colour or combination too wild for the iconic sportscar.

Pricing starts from $388,600 before options and on-road costs.

911 GT3 Touring

The GT3 without the wing. The 911 GT3 Touring offers all the raw benefits of the GT3; the manual transmission, rear-drive and the high-revving naturally aspirated flat-six, but without the giant rear wing and aggressive trackday flex.

Pricing starts from the same as the regular GT3, $388,600 before options and on-road costs.

911 GT3 RS

This isn't the everyday 911 for every driver.

Wings and vents hint at an aerodynamic focus that cannot be harnessed at street speeds. The 911 GT3 RS takes the 4.0-litre flat six to 386kW and 465Nm without the use of forced induction.

It's the ultimate statement of the 911, until a GT2 arrives.

Pricing starts from $500,200 before options and on-road costs.
