Mercedes-Benz dismisses X-Class ute as “niche” model, confirms it is under “review”

Mercedes-Benz has dismissed the X-Class as a “niche product” globally – despite the importance of the ute market in countries such as Australia – and confirmed in a statement to CarAdvice the future of the vehicle is under “review”. The comments come less than 24 hours after the global head of Nissan pick-up programs refused to say whether or not the partnership with Mercedes-Benz would continue.

Subaru WRX STI EJ20 Final Edition unveiled

The Subaru WRX STI EJ20 Final Edition, with its soon-to-be pensioned off engine, made its debut alongside the far more modern Levorg Prototype at the 2019 Tokyo motor show. Based on the WRX STI Type S, the Final Edition is powered by a EJ20 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot boxer engine tuned to produce 227kW of power and 422Nm of torque. All of this is, naturally, delivered to all four wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.

Nissan Cube officially ruled out for Australia

The Nissan Cube might be a cult hit in Australia thanks to thousands of ‘grey import’ used cars across the country, but that’s not enough to convince the Japanese giant to import the box-shaped hatchback as a brand-new model for local showrooms. The Nissan Cube will remain a Japan-only car because the cost of bringing the tiny vehicle up to Australian and European safety standards has been deemed prohibitively expensive.

Nissan Navara to eventually go hybrid, no more power planned for turbo diesel

The Nissan Navara is as good as it’s going to get in terms of performance for the time being – having just received an update that includes tougher rear suspension, Apple CarPlay, and a digital speed display. The company is poised to change gear and focus on an “electrified” version of future Nissan Navara models – rather than finding more power from the current twin-turbo diesel 2.3-litre four-cylinder.

Nissan Ariya concept: Here’s why all electric SUVs are going to look like this

The Nissan Ariya electric SUV might be a concept car for now, but the 2019 Tokyo motor show star could make its way to Australian showrooms if it goes into production. And its design is a sign of things to come from most leading car brands. The Ariya – which Nissan says roughly translates to “timeless Japanese futurism” – has two electric motors and the body sits on a “skateboard” style flat battery pack.
