2022 Subaru BRZ patented in Australia as local launch draws closer
Second-gen sports coupe patented Down Under, ahead of its Australian launch later this year.
Patent filings for the 2022 Subaru BRZ have been published in Australia, as the latest checkpoint along the second-generation Subaru sports coupe's road to Australian showrooms.
Design patents filed with Australian intellectual property officials reveal little not shown off at the BRZ's global unveiling in November 2020: an evolutionary step over the outgoing model in the design department, with new front and rear fascias, more sculpted side skirts and wheel arches, and overhauled lighting signatures.
The patents provide our first look at the right-hand-drive 2022 BRZ's interior which, to the surprise of few, is all but a mirror image of its left-hand-drive counterpart, sharing American-delivered models' enlarged 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen and space for a 7.0-inch digital instrument display.
While powertrain specification have yet to be locked in for our market, it's all-but-confirmed Australian-delivered BRZs will share their 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated, horizontally-opposed four-cylinder 'boxer' engine with international models, which in US-spec (and likely Australian) guise develops 170kW of power and 249Nm of torque.
Six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions should be offered with the sports coupe again locally, with the latter set to pick up key active safety aids including adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking.
While Subaru Australia has yet to lock in timing for the new-generation BRZ, it's understood the car will touch down on local shores in the second half of 2021, likely in the fourth quarter of the year.
