2021 GWM Ute: Australian debut confirmed for fourth quarter

The 2021 GWM Ute is coming to upset one of Australia's most popular vehicle segments.

Great Wall Motors is rebranding as GWM, with the Chinese company announcing its new ute model will be known simply as the 'Ute'.

Interestingly, all trim variants will begin with the name 'Cannon', previously reported as one potential model name for the new pick-up, along with 'Poer' (shown on the images in this story).

While Great Wall Motors has previously offered conventional passenger vehicles in Australia, it's expected that role will now be owned by the company's SUV brand, Haval.

The GWM Ute will be a dual-cab, four-wheel-drive pick-up, offered in three grades: the entry-level Cannon, the mid-spec Cannon-L, and the range-topping Cannon-X.

As reported last month, the 2021 GWM Ute will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine producing 120kW, with an expected torque figure of around 400Nm, with official confirmation yet to come.

A choice of six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmissions has been detailed, filling one of the major gaps in the outgoing Great Wall Steed's line-up, which is manual-only.

The new model is set to go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2020, but for now GWM has offered only a small selection of details. The new model promises to offer advances in safety and technology, according to documents seen by CarAdvice.

Right now, the company's teaser site for the new ute suggests a 9.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities will be standard.

Lane-keep assist, and an extendable ladder to access the tray will be available for some variants.

Suspension is independent up front, with a leaf-sprung axle at the rear, typical of the dual-cab segment in Australia. Best in class leg room is also promised, though there's no mention of which seating row it will apply to.

Bosch all-terrain technology for the 4x4 system and front and rear park sensors are also listed amongst the available early info.
