Video: Hyundai N’s 600kW mid-engined electric Veloster signals future

Hyundai N has revealed the RM20e at the 2020 Beijing Auto Show, providing a glimpse at what we can expect from the company's performance brand in the future.

Using a Hyundai Veloster N body, the RM20e has a mid-mounted 800-volt electric motor sending 596kW and 960Nm to the rear wheels. Power comes from a 60kWh battery pack.

While no official numbers have been provided, Hyundai says the RM20e is expected to do the 0-100km/h sprint in less than three seconds.

Despite a carbon-fibre body kit and large rear wing, the RM20e isn't a racing car – Hyundai calls the road-registered prototype a 'rolling lab', which N boss Albert Biermann says provides engineers with valuable insights in creating zero-emissions performance vehicles.

"Our new electrified RM20e pushes the proven RM platform forcefully into a new, environmentally-focused decade of the 21st century, stretching the performance envelope of electrification on normal road environments," Mr Biermann said.

Hyundai says the company's recent investment and strategic partnership with Croatian electric supercar company Rimac has facilitated the co-development of electrified prototypes.
