The Porsche 911 Speedster is named, and always was, after the original Porsche 356 Speedster from 1954, well before the first 911 made its way into the market. From that car the 911 Speedster eventuated offering a turbo wide body - with a non-turbo engine - and traditional humps that covered a hard-top convertible roof as per 356.
With the new Porsche 911 Speedster, the two humps still remain but they are simply there for cosmetic reasons only. Underneath there's a retractable soft-top roof setup similar to the one found on the Porsche Boxster Speedster.
Like the classic 911 Speedster, the 2011 model will feature a wide body borrowed from the Carrera 4 and Turbo all-wheel drive variants, whilst showcasing a non-turbo engine and rear-drive layout. The car will also feature a bespoke interior with 'Speedster' markings and a two-tone colour scheme.
Power will come from a 300kW 3.8-litre flat six matched with Porsche's PDK seven-speed dual clutch gearbox. There's also a limited-slip differential, ceramic brakes and active suspension (PASM).
Just 356 examples of the 911 Speedster will be made, of which only a limited number will make their way to Australian shores. They'll sell very quick even at the ridiculous price tag of $519,800. The car will probably build in value over the years though.
