2019 Opel Corsa revealed

Regular combustion-powered hatchback detailed following the debut of Corsa-e EV variant, and is now avaialble to order in Europe.

The all-new 2019 Opel Corsa has been detailed by the German brand, with European order books opening this week.

Priced from €13,990 ($22,668) in Germany, the sixth-generation Corsa is based on the PSA Group’s CMP scalable architecture, which also underpins the likes of the new Peugeot 208.

Standard equipment from the base model includes autonomous emergency braking with forward collision warning, which also incorporates pedestrian detection. Additional inclusions such as a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, and driver’s massage function are standard on the base trim level, too.

A range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines from the PSA Group are on offer, including 74kW and 96kW versions of a new 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol, which also make 205Nm and 230Nm of torque respectively.

In terms of performance, the high-output 1.2 completes the 0-100 sprint in 8.7 seconds, and can hit a top speed of 207km/h. A six-speed manual is standard for the 74kW petrol, with an eight-speed auto optional on the lower-output variant and standard on the 96kW model.

There’s also a 55kW non-turbo version of the 1.2-litre petrol, which is coupled to a five-speed manual as standard.

Joining the petrol family is a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel making 75kW and 250Nm, which claims to be the efficiency leader with a combined fuel consumption rating of just 4.0-4.6L/100km on the combined WLTP cycle depending on configuration.

The new Corsa also boasts significant weight savings compared to the outgoing model thanks to its lighter platform. In its lightest guise, the Corsa weights just 980kg – some 108kg lighter than the equivalent predecessor.

Additional weight-saving methods beyond the lighter chassis is lighter body-in-white (-40kg) and lighter three-cylinder engines, which are around 15kg lighter than their four-cylinder predecessors. The bonnet is also made from aluminium, a 2.4kg saving compared to the previous-model’s steel unit.

Other headlining features include the availability of IntelliLux LED matrix headlights, which Opel claims to be the first widely-available example of this headlight technology at the entry-level end of the market, and a range of high-end tech goodies like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot assist, lane-keep assist, an available 10.0-inch touchscreen navigation system, and ’Opel Connect’ online services (access to live traffic updates, fuel prices and more).

Four trim levels will be offered, each bringing a unique flavour. On top of the base variant, the Corsa will be available in sporty GS Line guise, along with the more luxurious Elegance. The Corsa Edition scores the most popular extras, according to Opel.

The combustion-powered line-up joins the recently-revealed Corsa-e electric variant, with sales to commence from July 1

Australia

Under its previous owner GM, the Opel brand was withdrawn from the Australian market in 2013 just a year after it was reintroduced.

It seems unlikely the brand and the Corsa will be reintroduced in the near future. The closely related next-generation Peugeot 208 is scheduled to go on sale in Australia during 2020, though.
