The SUV shares its powertrain with the Ioniq Hybrid, and debuts some new tech likely to show up in the mid-life refresh for the standard Kona.

Hyundai has expanded its Kona range once again, slotting the 2019 Kona Hybrid between the range-topping Electric and the regular petrol and diesel line-up.

Power in the hybrid comes from a 1.6-litre petrol engine making 77kW and 147Nm, mated with a permanent magnet electric motor offering 32kW and 170Nm, hooked up to a 1.56kWh lithium-ion polymer battery.

It's identical to the setup in the Ioniq Hybrid, wrapped up in the Kona's body. Combined outputs are 104kW and 265Nm, and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission is standard.

Claimed fuel consumption is 3.9L/100km on the NEDC test cycle with 16-inch wheels, and 4.3L/100km on the optional 18s.

Along with the hybrid powertrain, the electrified Kona debuts with some minor styling changes for Hyundai's compact crossover. It rides on a set of onion-dicer alloy wheels, and the cabin is home to a new, optional 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

It's an option in Europe, where a 7.0-inch display with smartphone mirroring is standard. Niceties like wireless phone charging will be offered in Europe, along with colour packs that bring coloured air vent surrounds, gearshift trim and seatbelt finishes.

The Kona Hybrid will also be offered with adaptive cruise control featuring stop/go. Although it's available on the Electric, petrol models have been denied the tech up until now – so keep an eye out for it on the model's next refresh.

Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, driver attention warning, lane-keeping assist and high-beam assist are all available depending on spec.

The Kona Hybrid goes on sale in August for the European market.
