Toyota Europe has announced it will be adopting the Corolla nameplate for its small hatchback, sedan and wagon range in 2019, dropping the long-running Auris badge it has used for some time.
The company also announced the new-generation Touring Sports wagon – recently spied during development testing – will make its global debut at the Paris motor show in October, alongside the rebadged hatchback.
"There is no better moment than the launch of the upcoming new generation model to re-introduce the Corolla name to our C-segment hatchback and wagon models," said Dr. Johan van Zyl, CEO for Toyota Motor Europe.
First introduced in 2006, the Auris name has served for over a decade in the Japanese and European markets, first appearing on the tenth-generation Corolla in those regions.
The Corolla is the world's best-selling model nameplate, with Toyota quoting "more than 45 million vehicles" since its introduction in 1966.
It's been over a decade since the company's local division last offered a wagon derivative of the Corolla, and that doesn't appear likely to change anytime soon.
Following the spy photos of the new-generation Corolla Sports Touring wagon last month, Orlando Rodriguez, Toyota Australia's product public relations manager, pretty much ruled out the new estate's introduction Down Under.
"Currently there are no plans to introduce a wagon variant of Corolla into Australia," he said.
