The next-generation Audi A1 has been teased on social media ahead of an anticipated reveal in the coming weeks.

In a short GIF-style clip posted on the company's Twitter profile, the frame shows a portion of the new model's centre stack – which features the new MMI Touch display, brightly-coloured air vent surrounds, and new climate controls seen in other Audi models like the Q2 and A3.

The hand in the clip writes the word 'Barcelona' on the display too, indicating the new light hatch will be revealed in the Spanish city.

Audi accompanied the GIF with the caption: "Think digital – the all new #Audi #A1 with virtual cockpit and MMI touch display", also confirming the availability of the company's all-digital instrument cluster for its smallest model.

We haven't heard much else from the four-ringed marque about the new A1 – other than the fact it was meant to be revealed before the end of last year – but we have a hunch it will get a comprehensive technology upgrade to reassert itself atop the Volkswagen Group's light car hierarchy.

Expect the latest and greatest driver assistance systems that aren't available in the ageing current model, and new internet-based infotainment and connectivity services similar to those available in the Q2 crossover.

In terms of design, recent spy images suggest the A1 will take an evolutionary path, keeping the overall look and shape of the current car, though it should grow in size and take on the more angular cues of Audi's latest models.

Powertrains will likely come in the form of turbocharged three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. There's also talk of an all-out S1 or RS1, complete with a version of the 2.0-litre turbo and all-wheel drive setup used in the Audi S3 and Volkswagen Golf R.

There's no firm reveal or launch date just yet, but we're guessing the new A1 will make its Barcelona debut in the coming weeks or months.
