If you’ve got $60,000 to spend on a hot hatch, you really need to have these two at the very top of your list.
They are the 2018 BMW M140i and the 2018 Volkswagen Golf R.
After you add an automatic gearbox to the Golf R for $2500, that figure creeps up to $55,990 (plus on-road costs) and after you add the Driver Assistance Package, to match the M140i, for an additional $1300, the price is $57,290 – just $2700 short of the M140i.
So, we have a comparison on our hands. We invited BMW tragic Joe Achilles to Australia to help us out with content and this test in particular.
Given his wealth of knowledge on BMW products, we wanted to go in-depth with this comparison to give you a good idea of the pros and cons of each car.
The test is then capped off with a 0–100km/h performance test of both cars. With all-wheel drive and launch control, the Golf R should walk it in… But will it succumb to the mighty turbocharged six-cylinder engine under the bonnet of the M140i?
Only one way to find out.
