All-new SUV flagship teased in designer sketch

The third-generation 2019 Volkswagen Touareg will make its debut in Beijing on March 23, the company has confirmed.

A single side-on sketch of the flagship SUV was posted online, previewing sleeker looks inspired by the Arteon and T-Prime GTE concept, the latter revealed in Beijing two years ago.

Under the skin, the all-new Touareg will ride on the same MLB Evo platform as the Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus and Porsche Cayenne.

Volkswagen says its flagship model will feature a "phalanx" of "innovative assistance systems", one of the "largest digital cockpits in its class", and enough connectivity options to make it a "driving internet node".

The company has also confirmed the option of rear-wheel steering, along with drivetrain air suspension and roll stabilisation features that will ensure a "safe and dynamic driving experience".

Key to Volkswagen's decision to reveal the new Touareg in China is the fact it's the company's largest individual market, with the large "C-segment" SUV class the Touareg competes in expected to double in the region by 2023. (In Australia, it would be considered large, or 'D segment'.)

We're expecting a range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines to be available in the new SUV, in four- and six-cylinder guises.

There should also be a plug-in hybrid 'GTE' version on the cards, likely sharing its drivetrain with the current Audi Q7 e-tron – which teams a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel with an electric motor for combined outputs of 275kW and 700Nm.

It's unclear whether Volkswagen will offer a performance 'R'-branded version, though a Touareg with the SQ7's 320kW/900Nm 4.0-litre V8 bi-turbo diesel would surely do well Down Under, considering our thirst for top-end go-fast variants of just about anything.

Stay tuned to CarAdvice for our coverage of the new Touareg's reveal on March 23.
