With its combination of 250kW/500Nm turbocharged six-cylinder power, rear drive and choice of manual or automatic transmission shoehorned into a small five-door body shell, the BMW M140 LCI was one of 2017’s most unique and highly anticipated offerings for the discerning petrolhead.

Better still, BMW wiped five grand from this mid-life updated version of the range-topping small hatchback. And while $59,990 seems steep for a hot hatch, it looked like a steal for a genuine performance steed from a bona-fide premium German marque.

A no-brainer proposition? Not quite. Concurrently, in late-2017 time, Munich lobbed the M240i: same potent three-litre engine, same drivetrain, a similar smattering of LCI updated goodies on the equipment list such as the critically acclaimed iDrive 6 infotainment system – and all crammed into sportier two-door bodywork.

But while the M240i‘s $76,510 entry point is chump change for a six-pot rear-driven coupe from the self-proclaimed maker of “ultimate driving machines”, opting for two doors rather than five raises the price of pint-sized BMW high performance by a frosty $17K!

So what are the key differences between BMW’s turbo twins? And what are the similarities? Does the $17K premium for the coupe stack up?
