2017 MG 3, MG 6 Plus pricing and specs: Reborn marque launches, again, in Australia

MG has launched the 2017 MG 3 hatch and 2017 MG 6 Plus fastback in Australia, marking the Chinese-owned British brand's latest swing at the Australian market.

The storied brand's most recent appearance in the hugely competitive Australian market was through a local distributor, but it failed to make any real headway and cars were left unsold for months.

This time, MG owner SAIC – China’s largest carmaker and a manufacturing partner to General Motors and Volkswagen – has taken direct control of the brand’s Australian sales.

On sale from late November, the MG 3 range - first scheduled to launch here back in 2013 - kicks off at $13,990 before on-road costs, while the larger MG 6 Plus starts at $21,990 before on-roads.

The company aims to offer a “fun and value-packed range”, with both models being offered in three-tier ranges; Core, Soul and Essence.

As the latest entrant into the Australian light car segment, the MG 3 will take on the likes of the Mazda 2 and Toyota Yaris.

Measuring 4018mm long, 1728mm wide and 1517mm high, the MG 3 is 42mm shorter, 33mm wider and 22mm taller than a Mazda 2, while the MG’s 256L boot just edges the its Japanese rival (250L).

Standard in the base MG 3 Core are 14-inch steel wheels, LED daytime-running lights, a CD player with MP3 compatibility, USB and auxiliary inputs, electric windows along with manual air-conditioning.

Moving up to the mid-spec MG 3 Soul ($14,990) adds remote central locking, bluetooth phone and audio streaming, leather multifunction steering wheel, chrome exhaust tip, six-way manually-adjustable driver’s seat, sunglasses holder, reverse parking sensors, “follow me home” headlights and a six-speaker audio system.

Topping the range is the MG 3 Essence ($15,990) which adds numerous styling enhancements including 16-inch alloy wheels, sports body kit with a rear boot spoiler and side sill extensions, along with cruise control, automatic headlights and wipers.

All MG 3 models are powered by a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine, developing 78kW of power at 6000rpm and 137Nm of torque at 4500rpm, mated exclusively to a five-speed manual transmission.

In terms of safety, all MG 3 models feature ABS and electronic brake-force distribution, stability control, six airbags, rear Isofix child seat mounts, and speed-sensitive door locking.

The MG 3 is also available in an array of bright and contrasting paint options, offering customers an extra degree of personalisation.

Meanwhile, the larger MG 6 Plus is claimed to have one of the largest and most spacious cabins in its class.

At 4561mm long, 1827mm wide and 1472mm tall, the MG 6 Plus is 212mm longer, 28mm wider and 19mm shorter top-to-bottom than a Volkswagen Golf.

The MG 6 Plus’s 429-litre boot is also ahead of its competitors, opening to an impressive 1379 litres with the rear seats folded - 49L/109L more than a Golf respectively.

Like the MG 3, the MG 6 Plus comes in Core, Soul and Essence grades, all equipped with a 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine hooked up to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Producing 118kW of power at 5500rpm and 215Nm of torque between 2000-4500rpm, the MG 6 Plus’s powerplant is among the most powerful at the $20,000 price point.

Claimed fuel consumption is 7.8L/100km on the combined cycle, helped by a standard idle stop/start system.

Standard equipment on the entry-level Core variant are 17-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime-running lights, LED tail-lights, electric mirrors, rear spoiler, fabric trim, heated front seats, leather multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, rear air vents, cruise control, push-button start, paddle shifters, an electronic park brake and rear parking sensors.

The mid-range Soul grade ($23,990) adds Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, eight-speaker sound system, remote central locking, automatic headlights and wipers, partial ‘Eco-leather’ trim, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and an electronic differential.

Stepping up to the flagship Essence ($25,990) brings niceties like 17-inch alloy wheels, leather seats, adaptive xenon headlights with auto-levelling, front parking sensors, rear-view camera, leather trim, along with electrically-adjustable front seats.

All MG 6 Plus grades feature ABS, EBD, stability control, brake assist, speed limiter, six airbags and rear Isofix child seat mounts.
