The Tata Xenon has scored a major safety upgrade, gaining electronic stability control and other assistance systems standard across the range.
The 2015 Tata Xenon – available nationally from today – introduces ESC along with traction control, hill hold control, drag torque control, hydraulic brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution.
The additions double the Xenon dual-cab’s ANCAP rating from two stars to four, putting the Indian-made utility on par with the dual-cab versions of the Mitsubishi Triton and the Nissan Navara D40, and ahead of the three-star Foton Tunland and Mahinda Pik-Up and two-star Great Wall V240.
The Xenon achieves the elevated rating despite coming with only two front airbags (front-side and curtain bags are not available) and featuring a lap-only seatbelt for the middle-rear passenger rather than a more secure lap-sash belt.
The single-cab Xenon variants remain unrated by ANCAP.
The price of all upgraded Xenon variants rises $2000 (compared with the driveaway plus cashback prices offered on 2014-plated vehicles since June) with the exception of the flagship dual-cab pick-up 4×4, which is up $3000 to $28,990 driveaway. The range now kicks off with the single-cab chassis 4×2 at $22,990 driveaway, which comes with an alloy tray.
The arrival of the 2015 Tata Xenon coincides with the launch of Tata Motors Australia’s enhanced Tough Cover program ownership program.
The program increases the Xenon’s roadside assistance and warranty from three years to four, with the latter capped at 100,000km.
Tata has also introduced a capped-price servicing program for all Xenon customers. The four-year/60,000km program fixes the price of the first four scheduled services (due at 15,000km/12-month intervals) at $385, capping the total servicing cost over the initial ownership period to $1540.
All Tata Xenon utes are powered by a 110kW/320Nm 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine.
Air conditioning, USB input and Bluetooth connectivity are standard in all variants, while the dual-cabs add satellite navigation and a reverse-view camera as standard.
