Nearly 4,500 staff at Toyota's manufacturing plant in Burnaston, central England (pictured above), and at its engine plant in Deeside, north Wales, are affected. Production at the factories will also stop on two days a month.
Toyota builds the Avensis and Auris cars in the Burnaston factory, which employs 3,900. The Deeside factory builds petrol engines and employs 570.
"During this time we will continue to monitor the market and company situation closely," Toyota said. "We believe the measures we have announced give us a greater opportunity to maintain employment through this difficult period."
The plan will commence April 1 and remain in place for one year at which time it will then be reviewed.
