The mid-engined Italian sports car's lap of the 20.8km Nordschleife circuit positions it on par with the original time set by the Audi R8 V8 in 2007 and just clear of the current-generation BMW M3’s time of 8min05sec.
The 4C is also the second fastest four-cylinder-powered production car to ever run around the Nurburgring circuit, trumped by only the barely street-legal Caterham R500 Superlight, which clocked a 7min55sec lap in 2000.
Weighing 895kg, the rear-wheel drive Alfa Romeo 4C is powered by a 1.75-litre turbocharged engine producing 177kW and 350Nm of torque. Mated to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, it claims 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds.
The 4C goes on sale locally from mid 2014, priced from $75,000.
