2014 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T Sport revealed : new turbocharged sedan on the radar for Australia

The all-new 2014 Hyundai Sonata has been revealed at the New York auto show in sporty 2.0T Sport guise.

The new Sonata features a 2.0-litre direct-injection turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 183kW and 352Nm, considerably more than the 2.4-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder (142kW/247Nm). It comes mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and drives the front wheels.

The 2.0T Sport features a range of styling enhancements including revised bumpers front and rear, a unique grille, lower sill extensions, quad exhaust tips and 18-inch alloy wheels. The car will likely be the flagship model in the new Sonata line-up in the US, and Australia appears likely to see the addition of the 2.0T Sport model in showrooms, too.

Hyundai Australia public relations manager Guido Schenken told CarAdvice the turbo variant is currently under consideration for the new Sonata, which will launch in the Australian market in the third quarter of 2014.

"We're reviewing the 2.0-litre turbo and the 2.4-litre four-cylinder for the Australian market," Schenken said.

The same 2.0-litre turbo is fitted to the Santa Fe SUV in some markets, but Hyundai is not planning to offer that drivetrain locally at this stage.

For the new Sonata, a more efficient but less powerful 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder with 123kW and 201Nm is set to be offered in some markets, but we won't see it locally.

"We're not looking at that engine at this point in time. We think the 2.4-litre is a better fit for the Australian market," Schenken said.

If the turbo version does arrive, it may be badged as an SR model, which currently applies to sportier models in the brand's range, such as the Veloster SR Turbo, Accent SR and i30 SR.

"That's something we might look at for the future," Schenken said.

Hyundai will offer the Sonata in the US with Apple's new in-car media platform, CarPlay - but that won't be seen locally at launch, according to Schenken.

"Not at this stage," he said.

The new Sonata will tackle the likes of the Toyota Camry, Mazda 6 and Volkswagen Passat. Pricing for the new model is expected to start below $30,000.
