2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel Review
EXPENSIVE BUT WORTH IT
This car is now 3 years old and done 63,000 km. It still drives, feels and looks like new. There have been no problems with it. Nothing has broken or fallen off, no squeaks or rattles, the leather shows no signs of wear, the doors still close with a rock solid thunk. This car is so well made you can see where the ridiculously high price has been invested.
- Incredibly well made, Sports car handling in a truck, Quality of materials, Reliability so far
- Very expensive to buy and service
RUNNING COSTS
Across normal suburban driving with some motorway work I average 8.9 lt per km. Normal annual services cost $700, Major service (60,000km) cost $3,600 including some break repairs. Tyres cost $700 each (Michelin 21") but have lasted 60,000km which is great for such a heavy vehicle.
PERFORMANCE
Huge amounts of torque from turbo diesel gives vary rapid acceleration at almost any speed. I have had high performance cars in the past and this is quicker than I expected from an SUV. At 110kph the engine peacefully ticks over at 1,800 revs. The steering is sports car direct with a lovely feel, the handling is car like. When I am on my own I don't need to slow down much for corners and the car doesn't roll much and it sticks to the road like the proverbial. This is a great car to do big miles in.
COMFORT AND FACILITIES
Electric memory 14 way front seats are comfy but if I had specified this car myself I would have ordered the 18 way sport seats which are amazing. Storage space at the front is limited. Auto wipers, lights etc work well. Touch operated stereo and sat nav screen works well, though map programme picks some strange routes sometimes. Other functions (air-con, screen display etc) are run by buttons and knobs which is much better than the horrid mouse controllers on BMWs, Mercedes.
Back seats are comfy and easy to lay flat to extend load area which is a good size. Power push button tail gate works well. Once moving the diesel engine is quiet enough but when idling you can hear its a diesel.
OVERALL
Pretty hard to fault this car and I will be happy to keep it until the service costs become prohibitive. This is my first Porsche but probably not my last.
