Video: Driver caught on dash cam making risky and illegal manoeuvre

Authorities slam reckless driver caught ‘brake checking’ another vehicle on Sydney freeway.

A dashcam video shared on the social media platform Reddit shows an aggressive driver in a red MG ZS SUV performing an illegal and highly dangerous ‘brake check’ manoeuvre in front of a ute on a Sydney freeway.

The footage shows the red SUV driving erratically between vehicles as the ute passes a slower vehicle in the left lane. The ute’s indicator can be seen flashing to move left before the SUV drives around it and then slams on the brakes in front.

The ute and a white Toyota Yaris are forced to take evasive action before the red MG and the ute pull alongside each other – no doubt for some harsh words – before the SUV speeds away.

Speaking to Drive, a Transport NSW spokesperson noted: “Drivers who engage in risky behaviour, such as intimidating braking, can face serious negligent, furious, or reckless driving charges or even menacing driving charges.

"The consequences of such behaviour can be severe, including large fines and imprisonment, particularly if it leads to death or serious injury.”

In this instance, the dashcam footage could be used as evidence against the driver of the MG. Driving in a manner that does not afford a safe braking distance between two vehicles can carry a $514 fine in New South Wales, but if the driver is seen to be ‘menacing’ other road users, they will have to attend court and the penalty will be determined by a magistrate.

Drive advises all motorists to take it easy on the roads, particularly at highway speeds. There is never an excuse for aggressive and dangerous driving.
